Location of Hansens in Schleswig, Denmark 1778 - 1872

Historically the area our Danish forebears came from was known as Schleswig, an independent Duchy occupied by people of Danish and German ethnicity. From 1864 to 1920 Schleswig was Prussian during Henry’s lifetime but since 1920 Northern Schleswig has been part of Denmark. It is now called the Region of Southern Denmark on the Jutland peninsula.

Hans Soerensen and Karen retired around 70 years old, and as it was custom the farm was passed on to the next generation. The daughter Maren had married Christen Pedersen, and the daughter and son-in-law took over the farm while her parents continued to live on the farm on a material pension.
